Our Story
Our story began in April of 2023 when our school district put its Suzuki program on pause. The program employed three instructors, each with a private studio of violin, viola, or cello students who were exclusive to the district. Parents, teachers, and students were informed that due to budget realignments, lessons would finish in May and instruments should be returned.
With heavy hearts, families began looking not only for a new instructor, but also an instrument to replace the one they were obligated to return. Some families could not afford to purchase a quality instrument and resorted to buying a cheaper alternative. Although not the quality wished for, a low-cost instrument served the purpose of allowing students to practice until a better option became available.

With summer fast approaching and knowing how important lessons are to a student’s success, Dr. Elizabeth Torres, one of the Suzuki instructors, graciously offered to continue teaching her violin students through the summer, free of charge. Today, these students still play the violin and eagerly await a return of cost-effective lessons and instruments. The difficult decision made by our school district to pause its Suzuki program has sparked a movement among parents, students, and community members who want this beautiful program to continue in our area. The instructor’s generous spirit and giving heart set a fire in many of us in our community to work together to create Kids’ Community Strings.

Our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase quality instruments and provide low-cost violin lessons to the children of Hunt County and the surrounding areas.
